UK MPs back plans for army reserves

A group of British Tory MPs, supported by Labour, tabled an amendment on Wednesday calling for a pause in the coalition government’s plans to axe thousands of army jobs and replace them with reservists.

Under the proposals put forward by British Defence Secretary Philip Hammond, the size of the army reserve will be expanded from 19,000 to 30,000 and the number of regular forces will be cut by 20,000 within seven years.

However, the Tory-led government won the vote on its plans to reorganize the army by 306 to 252 votes.

British Tory MP John Baron, who tabled the amendment, argued that lawmakers should have been given the opportunity to assess the proposals by the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD).

“What is quite clear is this plan is in trouble. If we don’t say ‘stop’ now, if only for a very brief moment to re-examine the logic, to make sure the plan stands up, to make sure that we scrutinize properly the viability and cost-effectiveness of this plan … people will not thank us for (it),” Baron said.

Meanwhile, Hammond defended the government’s army plans, saying there was no turning back.

Earlier in September, some Conservative MPs described the government’s proposals as being driven by “financial necessity and not strategic design”.
