UK MP slams Heathrow ‘appalling’ delays

Chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee Keith Vaz said after visiting the airport’s Terminal 4 on Monday that people were left “stacked” before passport check booths for incoming flights from Asia and the United States at 7 am.

“I was appalled by the length of queues in the immigration hall this morning,” Vaz said.

Vaz who visited Heathrow to see whether the government has fulfilled its promises to tackle the long queues at immigration offices at the airport said the chaotic situation persists despite the fact that the Border Force had two months to deal with the passport check booths’ staffing problem.

“The worst aspect was that half of the immigration desks were simply not opened even though the Border Force had prior knowledge of all flight arrivals,” he said.

“This creates additional security pressures with luggage piling up in the baggage hall. We had people waiting in the corridors at the busiest international airport in the world,” he added.

Airport operator BAA said the Border Force has yet again failed to meet its waiting time target of maximum 45 minutes for the European Economic Area that includes the EU, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway.

The BAA warned last week that international flights passengers still have to wait in long queues despite the Home Office promise last month that all Border Force desks at Heathrow will be adequately manned to prevent congestion during peak Olympic arrival times.

The immigration offices’ queues crisis comes as the Olympics inflow of an estimated 300,000 athletes, their families, media staff and fans is just days away.

Heathrow has been plagued with delays of up to two-and-a-half hours over the past month with media reports saying the queues at passport check booths at Terminal 4 were half a mile on Friday June 29.
