‘UK MP plea for normalizing Iran ties’

“One of the British parliament’s officials has recently requested that bilateral ties [with Britain] be repaired,” Nejabat told Iran’s ISNA news agency.

“However, the parliament or the MPs are certainly not in charge of making decisions on the subject, as … the Supreme National Security Council, the Foreign Ministry and [Iran’s] most senior officials will decide how to deal with the country [Britain],” Nejabat added.

The Iranian MP further said Iran is currently running its mission in London with the minimum number of diplomats, just enough to keep consular services going, though at a slow pace.

Nejabat also underlined that the European countries have a track record of cutting ties and then pleading for normalization of ties, adding that Britain seems to be following the same pattern.

He, however, raised doubts about the possibility of a return to normal ties at this time considering the British insolence toward Iran.

“The British are giving signals that they want to repair ties with Iran and have made the request but the situation means even examination of the matter [mending ties with London] needs consideration as Britain has been rude to Iran,” Nejabat said.

Tehran-London relations are now at their lowest level, short of cutting diplomatic ties, following a series of hostile measures by the British government against Iran.

Back in December Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast pointed to Britain’s expulsion of Iran’s diplomatic mission from London as one of Britain’s insults against Iran, which needs an explanation.
