UK MoD slammed for overspending

The Commons Public Accounts Committee has launched a scathing attack on the MoD after a report by the committee revealed that the costs of the ministry’s “wasteful” projects have soared by nearly 500 million pounds in 2010-11.

The committee accused Britain’s defence chiefs of failing to “live within their means” as the costs involved in carrying out the MoD’s 15 largest projects would be £6.1billion more than the ministry’s budget.

“It is unacceptable that the department still cannot identify the extent of the current gap between resources and expenditure,” said the committee in its report.

Furthermore, the committee called on the MoD to announce “how and by when it will balance this year’s budget.”

The wasting of the British taxpayers’ money comes as the MoD is bent on filling a £42billion black hole in its budget by axing over 20,000 soldiers.

Furthermore, a leaked report from the headquarters of the US Department of Defense, the Pentagon, revealed that the £5billion fighter jets that the MoD had ordered from the US could not land on its aircraft carriers.

The MoD’s wasteful spending and its staff cutting come as Britain’s role in wars around the world has cost the British taxpayer billions of pounds.

Britain’s involvement in the Afghanistan war cost £5 billion in 2011 while its military intervention in invading Libya was estimated to have cost £1.75 billion.
