UK minister to pocket £17,000 payoff

Chris Huhne stepped down earlier this month after he was charged over allegations that he used the name of his then wife Vicky Pryce to escape speed penalty.

He will receive three months of his £68,827 ministerial salary, which is £17,207, despite rising pressure from top Tory and Liberal Democrat ministers that ex-ministers must give up severance cash.

On top of his annual ministerial pay, the 57-year-old MP also paid £65,738 as Lib Dem MP for Eastleigh in Hampshire.

His decision to receive the taxpayer-funded payoff has prompted further allegations of hypocrisy as he formerly shared a platform with Tory chairman Baroness Warsi when she said resigning ministers should forego the controversial payoff.

Warsi said in 2010 that when people “are being asked to tighten their belts to deal with Labour’s economic mess, it is unacceptable that the very people responsible walk away with up to £20,000 each.

“Forfeiting this pay would be the first step towards accepting their responsibility.”

Senior Liberal Democrats have also criticized the former ministers for accepting the taxpayer-funded payoffs. Huhne’s Lib Dem colleague Steve Webb said in 2009 that the British nationals would be appalled to understand that ex-ministers got payoffs even when they were dismissed or left because of their own free will. “While thousands are losing their jobs, failed ministers get a huge payout on top of their salary as MPs. This can’t go on.”

A Cabinet Office spokesman said, “We can confirm that following his resignation from the Cabinet, Chris Huhne will receive a severance payment of three months of his ministerial salary.”

Earlier this month, Labour MP Chris Evans urged Huhne to forfeit the £17,207 as he formerly appeared together with Baroness Warsi campaigning against the payoffs.

“If the Tories don’t make it clear that they believe Chris Huhne should give up this payment, it will be clear that they think there’s one rule for them and their Liberal Democrat friends and another for everyone else,” Evans added.
