“There are an awful lot of people who are only there because they gave £1 million to [former PMs] Tony Blair or Margaret Thatcher or indeed – we have all had our problems with this – Lloyd George,” Lord Oakeshott told BBC’s The Daily Politics.
“It is deeply corrupt. There is no way of appointing party peers to the House of Lords without corruption,” he added.
Oakeshott also said while there are “some people” with expertise at the upper chamber of parliament, there are also “an awful lot of deadbeats … [and] has-beens.”
Oakeshott’s tirade comes as the House of Commons is to hold a vote on the Lib Dems’ planned Lords reforms that proposes an 80 percent-elected upper chamber on Tuesday.
The proposals have led to massive tensions in the Liberal Democrat-Conservative (Tory) coalition government.
Seventy Tory MPs have already signed a letter to appeal for unity among their ranks to force a defeat on the proposals led by the Lib Dem Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.
