UK journalists turning evidence hounds?

Independent Television News (ITN), which produces content for ITV News, Channel 4, and Channel 5, has expressed concerns over a “worrying trend” in the relationship between the British police and journalists which is turning British broadcasters into “evidence gatherers.”

The British police have ordered the BBC, ITN, and Sky News to pass them footage of those involved the unprecedented unrest in August and protests against the eviction of Dale Farm travelers, reported the Guardian on Tuesday.

The head of compliance for the ITN, John Battle, warned against this “worrying trend” saying “it has clearly become a real issue.”

“In the past these things were rare – they weren’t a deluge. The message needs to be sent to police and the courts that broadcasters have a role to play and that is being jeopardised by increased pressure and being seen as evidence gatherers. It’s a steelier stance than we’ve seen before,” said Battle.

Last week the British police won a production order at Chelmsford magistrates court requiring Britain’s big broadcasters to deliver 36 hours of unbroadcast footage of Dale Farm evictions to the police.

While British Transport police chief constable, Andy Trotter, maintained that journalists should not be an arm of the law, a spokesman for the Association of Chief Police Officers said the production orders have been “fundamentally vital in securing convictions.”
