UK journalists nabbed for bribing police

Senior journalists at the media tycoon Rupert Murdoch’s newspaper, the Sun, were arrested on Saturday over the allegations of bribing police and public officials to provide them with information.

The event constitutes the second occasion of arresting journalists at the Sun in just two weeks after four other Sun journalists were arrested in late January.

However, this time, the arrests went beyond journalists’ making inappropriate payments to the British police as a Ministry of Defence employee, a serving police officer, and a member of the armed forces were also arrested.

Scotland Yard did not disclose the names of the arrested, however, confirmed that eight people were arrested after the Management and Standards Committee (MSC) of News Corporation, the Sun’s parent company owned by Murdoch, provided police officers with information about bribing practices.

The MSC also called for “immediate legal representation” for the arrested after informing detectives from Operation Elveden, set up to investigate illegal payments to police officers.

“News Corporation remains committed to ensuring that unacceptable news-gathering practices by individuals in the past will not be repeated and last summer authorised the MSC to co-operate with the relevant authorities,” said the MSC.

The recent arrests have shed more light on hacking practices in the British press as links between the British police and journalists of other newspapers are being revealed.
