‘UK households to be worse off by 2015’

The IFS accused Osborne of using questionable statistics in his Autumn Statement speech earlier on Thursday and said British households would be “considerably” worse off at the time of the 2015 general election compared to 2010, when the coalition government took office.

The IFS’s director Paul Johnson said household surveys indicated that income fell sharply in 2010 and 2011, but added that it is significantly lower now than it was in 2010.

“And while it should start to grow, it will surely still be below its 2010 level by the time we get to the election in 2015,” Johnson said.

He also backed main opposition Labour Party’s claims that household budgets were being squeezed hard under the coalition.

Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls said previously that British families on benefits will receive £1,600 a year less under the government’s welfare reforms.

“That is pretty consistent with what we know from survey data happened to household incomes between 2009-10 and 2011-12,” Johnson said.

In his Autumn Statement, Osborne sought to counter Labour’s arguments, saying household incomes rose by 3.9 percent between 2008 and the second quarter of 2013.

Johnson, however, questioned the claims made by the Chancellor, saying he makes “promises on spending increases while stating that he will keep total spending at the same level”.

“He can’t keep doing that,” he added.
