‘UK Home Secretary destroys police’

Rank-and-file police officers in Britain have said Home Secretary Theresa May is “on the precipice of destroying a police service that is admired and replicated throughout the world”.

The accusations come less than a week after nearly 32,000 police officers marched though London joining a nationwide strike staged by British public sector workers against the government’s changes to pays and pensions.

“This is a bad deal for the police service. We have less resilience, fewer warranted officers, a weakened front line and a radically altered model of British policing”, Paul McKeever, the Police Federation’s chairman, is to tell May when she addresses the federation conference in Bournemouth.

Furthermore, last week, one of Britain’s most senior police officers warned of a “real possibility” that crime rates in the UK would rise with the 20% police budget cuts and the 16,000 posts to be lost by 2015.

Nevertheless, the Home Office has said that the British police should take their own share of spending cuts and austerity measures in order to contribute “to reducing the record budget deficit.
