UK govt. urged to tackle growing job gap

According to a report from the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), one in five under 25s in the North are not in education, employment or training, compared to14 percent in the South West, and 12 percent in the South East.

The IPPR also found that 47 percent of those claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance in the North have been on the dole for over six months, compared with 41 percent in the South East and 40 percent in the South West.

Calling on the ministers to prevent the current job gap growing, IPPR spokesman Ed Cox warned that the Coalition government’s initiatives are unable to cope with the increase in jobless youngsters when schools and universities turn out this summer, adding, “There needs to be a joint effort to prevent a big spike in NEETs numbers.”

“Schools need to encourage students to stay on where they can, colleges need to make extra efforts to recruit next year’s intake and public sector employers need to promote work experience schemes,” he added.

Earlier, the figures from the Department for Education (DfE) showed that the number of young people in England who are not in education, employment or training has increased to nearly one million in the first three months of this year,

According to the DfE’s report published on May 24, 954,000 people aged between 16 and 24 in England have been classed as Neet in the first quarter of the year, compared with 925,000 in the same quarter a year ago.
