UK govt. urged to scrap Trident plans

A report issued by the liberal thinktank, CentreForum, said that the coalition government should cancel its “nonsensical” plan to spend large amount of money on providing the Navy with the new nuclear deterrent since there has been no predictable threat to the country.

The thinktank also stressed that the government is sleepwalking into making a lavish and illogical plan at a time when the air force, army and navy are facing harsh spending cuts.

The 60-page report, entitled “Dropping the Bomb: A Post-Trident Future,” asked for the immediate retirement of Trident, as the Trident replacement costs could not be justified while the Ministry of Defence is squeezed by £74 billion of cuts.

“By scrapping Trident, the UK would be able to use the savings to increase the capacity of its conventional forces. Investing in conventional forces will be far more effective in protecting the UK’s international status than replacing Trident,” the report said.

However, Prime Minister David Cameron and his Tory colleagues believe that the Trident nuclear submarines are crucial for the country as a constant nuclear deterrent. Accordingly, last may the Tory-led government allocated 3 billion pounds on preliminary work on a new generation of nuclear-armed subs.

Nevertheless, the government had to postpone the final decision on the replacement of Trident nuclear submarines until 2016. Because unlike the Tories, the Liberal Democrats have voiced their opposition against the plan, they have argued for other alternatives that require less money, like placing nuclear missiles on the astute submarines.

Despite the fact that the costly Trident issue has created problems within the coalition, Britain will not have any bases to keep nuclear weapons, if Scotland gets its independence from the United Kingdom. Currently, the British nuclear submarine fleet is based at the Coulport and Faslane naval bases in Scotland. Last month Scottish First minister Alex Salmond announced that if the Scots vote for independence, Scotland would no more tolerate the continued presence of the nuclear submarines.

Meanwhile Cameron apparently ignores rising concerns over his plans after he once again said Trident submarines guarantee protection against other countries’ nuclear risks.

Political observers believe that Trident is only a symbol of national strength for the British government, because Britain has not faced any nuclear threats in recent history.
