The criticism came from former Conservative Premier John Major during a speech in Norfolk.
“In every single sphere of British influence, the upper echelons of power in 2013 are held overwhelmingly by the privately educated or the affluent middle class,” said Major.
This comes while Cameron has been criticized for his appointments, with opponents saying the prime minister prioritizes intimacy over qualifications.
It is reported that more than half of the Cabinet have been privately educated and are financially independent.
In addition, Major called for more to be done to boost the country’s social mobility- the idea that individuals can achieve better educational opportunity, job prospects and salaries than the previous generation.
“Our education system should help children out of the circumstances in which they were born, not lock them into the circumstances in which they were born.
This comes as a recent report from the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission, which called for an increase in equality in the country.
The UK government “needs to redouble its efforts to reduce our country’s fairness deficit,” read the report.
The Commission also said that Britain still had “high levels of child poverty and low levels of social mobility” with a rising number of children in “absolute poverty” coming from working families.
Furthermore, the commission warned that many low and middle-income children face being “worse off” than their parents due to falling earnings and raising prices.
