UK govt. seeks tighter grip on Britons

The new ploys were declared by the head of the country’s domestic intelligence agency MI5 in a rare speech on Monday night, which was his first in almost two years.

Jonathan Evans, director general of MI5, told the inaugural Lord Mayor’s Annual Defense and Security Lecture in London that what he called ‘the Arab Spring’ has given Al-Qaeda new arenas in which to rebuild, increasing the chances of home-grown terrorist attacks in Britain.

The MI5 director claimed that half a million have been checked as part of the accreditation process, which MI5 has helped with, and it is thought a number of individuals have been denied accreditation based on national security checks.

Yet, Jonathan Evans was desperate to admit that British “would-be jihadis” were known to be travelling and receiving training in the likes of Libya and Egypt.

“In back rooms and in cars and on the streets of this country there is no shortage of individuals talking about wanting to mount terrorist attacks here,” he said.

Figures last year suggested more than 100 Britons had received training by terrorist groups in Somalia and Evans in his speech indicated there could be a steady stream of new recruits in the UK.

Evans also warned the London 2012 Olympics was an “attractive target” for terrorist groups.
The allegation comes as the country is busy imposing major restrictions on British citizens in the wake of upcoming Olympics Games in London.

As an example, the zone surrounding London from which private planes, hot air balloons and ultralights are banned will increase by up to 48 kilometers in all directions.

Meanwhile, residents of East London are worrying that they will be made terrorist targets after it was confirmed that high-velocity missiles (HVMs) may be attached to their roofs as a security measure during the Olympic Games.
