UK govt. seeking police privatization

Two of UK’s largest police forces, West Midlands and Surrey, have invited major private firms to take control of a broad range of services formerly conducted by the police, the Guardian revealed.

The privatization contract is regarded as the largest in police force, with a value of £1.5 billion for seven years, which would increase to £3.5 billion if other forces also got involved.

Home Secretary Theresa May who has imposed a 20% cut on police forces, claimed that the cuts would not affect the frontline policing, as it could be protected by employing the private firms to transform the public services. It is believed that the radical privatization is the first sign of what that will indicate in practice.

The revelation has sparked massive concerns, with Ben Priestley, Unison’s national officer for police and justice, considering the move as a “dangerous experiment” with local safety and taxpayers’ money.

Priestley urged the police authorities not to regard the private sector as an answer to the government’s cuts. Adding, “Privatization means that the police will be less accountable to the public. And people will no longer be able to go to the Independent Police Complaints Commission if they have a problem. When a critical incident happens, a force’s ability to respond will be severely compromised.”

Simon Reed, vice-chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, condemned the decision believing the privatization would be a “dangerous road to take.”

“The priority of private companies within policing will be profit and not people, and we must not forget, they are answerable to their shareholders and not to the public we serve,” Reed said.

However, a Home Office spokesman insisted that the private firms would only be responsible for investigating crimes and not arresting the criminals. And that several forces are using the private sector to run custody suites.
