UK govt. rapped over Olympic contractor

The “official provider of security and cash services for the Olympics” G4S is a known provider of equipment for several Israeli military checkpoints in the occupied West Bank as well as for security systems at the Ofer detention center in Ramallah, which British parliament severely criticized for human rights abuses in 2010.

The parliamentary grilling will be led by Labour peer Lord Hollick who will table a written question on Monday on the steps the government has taken to prevent G4S from continued cooperation with Israeli officials in the illegal settlements.

The British government’s eager cooperation with G4S is despite Foreign Secretary William Hague’s repeated condemnation of illegal Israeli settlements.

“I condemn the announcement by Israel to authorize the building of 851 new settlement units across the West Bank,” Hague said on Friday.

“The British Government, and our EU partners, have made it consistently clear that settlement construction is illegal under international law, an obstacle to peace and should stop immediately, in line with Israel’s own commitment under the 2003 road map,” he added.

This comes as G4S issue is only the latest in the range of other signs that give the lie to London’s apparent condemnation of illegal Israeli settlements.

In one such signals, Hague openly hailed London-Tel Aviv ties during talks with his Israeli counterpart Avigdor Lieberman back in May saying the two sides had a “positive” and “wide ranging” meeting on further cooperation.
