Around 200 demonstrators from British groups such as the London Mining Network, Reclaim the Streets, UK Uncut and indigenous community groups from West Papua, Peru and elsewhere marched through London’s Square Mile on June 15, aiming to make the activities of Swiss mining firm Xstrata and other extraction companies’ records “truly visible” in Britain.
The demonstration which was organized by a 30-strong activist group coalition, is seeking to challenge the complicity of western countries in labor and human rights abuses of indigenous people.
“It is outrageous that in this modern day and age, practices such as slavery, murder and rape are not only tolerated by those multinationals but also supported by the British government,” said Sylvestre Mido from the Congolese Action Youth Platform (CAYP).
“Executive greed here is costing lives abroad, while our pension funds benefit from their activities,” said Occupy London activist Jack Dean.
“These corporations need to be stopped from making us all complicit in their crimes in the majority of the world where their prioritization of profit over people is felt most acutely.”
