‘UK gov’t cuts damage police service’

A report says the British government’s austerity cuts to the police force are “damaging the police service,” warning that smaller forces could face danger.

The report was published by police watchdog Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) on Tuesday.

According to the study, the country’s police forces have imposed spending cuts to the amount of £ 2.5 billion over the past four years, and further austerity measures are planned in 2015-2016.

The watchdog said that the planned spending cuts would put some smaller police forces in jeopardy within the next three to five years.

The report showed that, by next March, the British police workforce, including civilians and support staff, will be downsized by 34,000 people, including 8,500 fewer frontline police officers. The HMIC said that the cuts may result in forces struggling to respond to events such as riots, demonstrations, multiple murders or kidnappings.

There are “substantial concerns about the ability of some smaller forces to withstand the anticipated budget reductions while maintaining an effective service to the public,” the report said.

The watchdog also revealed that many police force leaders have said that the reductions will result in the police service becoming “increasingly reactive – responding to 999 calls and investigating crime – rather than preventing and reducing crime.”

The author of the report, Tom Winsor, called for a national debate on future collaboration between forces and with other public services.

Chairman of the Police Federation Steve White commented on the report saying, it “provides clear evidence that cuts are damaging the police service and officers’ capacity to keep the public safe.”
