UK Gitmo inmate forcibly drugged?

Legal action charity Reprieve said that Aamer, last British citizen imprisoned illegally for more than a decade in the notorious American military’s Guantanamo camp in Cuba, may have been one of those subjected to powerful anti-psychotic sedatives, calling on the Coalition government to seek answers from the US.

Last week, a Pentagon report revealed that Guantanamo Bay inmates have been interrogated while receiving powerful sedatives used in hospitals to treat poor mental health.

The 41-page report, obtained by truthout.org under Freedom of Information Act, was prepared by the inspector general of the US Department of Defense, following a two-year probe into the use of anti-psychotic medication during interrogations.

“During his imprisonment he has lost 40 percent of his body weight, he now suffers from multiple illnesses and injuries and his face bears the marks of intense suffering. Now we find that prisoners have been forced to take drugs with dangerous side-effects,” said the charity’s legal director Cori Crider.

“The British government must immediately seek answers from the US as to whether Shaker was fed these chemicals and demand that he is freed from Guantanamo before it is too late.”

Meanwhile, a British Foreign Office spokesman said the Aamer’s case remained a high priority and “we continue to make clear to the US that we want him released and returned to the UK as a matter of urgency. However we cannot put a timescale on this.”

Shaker Aamer was kidnapped in 2001 in Afghanistan and accused of leading a unit of fighters in the Asian country. He was transferred to US military’s Guantanamo Bay prison facility later in 2002.

As there had been no evidence against the , he was cleared for release under the administration of former President of the United States, George W. Bush in 2007 and also Barack Obama’s administration in 2009, but he was never set free.
