UK fears Argentina Olympics protest

On June 24, the Sunday Times newspaper reported that senior Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) sources are “concerned” at intelligence that Argentina is planning to use the Olympic Games to highlight its campaign for sovereignty over the disputed Malvinas Islands.

“We are concerned that Argentina will use the Olympics as an opportunity for protests about the Falklands and have been looking into what we can do,” said a senior foreign ministry source.

According to the report, the London Olympics is expected to become a forum for political protests, as Argentinean athletes may hold a demonstration similar to the black power protest staged at the 1968 Games in Mexico City.

In 1968 African-American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos put on black gloves and raised their fists while receiving their medals for the men’s 200m, in support of black rights.

About 140 athletes from Argentina are due to compete in the London Olympics this summer, taking part in 28 events.

However, Argentina’s national Olympic committee told the International Olympic Committee (IOC) its team does not see the Games as a “platform for politics”.

Britain has ruled the Malvinas Islands since 1833 and the archipelago is still one of the 16 territories on the UN Committee on Decolonization’s list of colonies awaiting liberation.

Despite Argentina’s calls for negotiations over the islands, Britain has repeatedly ruled out any possibility for talks.

Earlier this month, addressing the annual meeting of the UN Decolonization Committee, Argentinean President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner lashed out at Britain’s “colonialist” policies and criticized British Prime Minister David Cameron’s decision to mark the 30th anniversary of the 72-day war between Britain and Argentina over the archipelago.
