The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed the deaths, announcing that the soldiers, from 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment, were killed at a checkpoint in the south of Nahr-e Saraj district in Helmand province.
The attack was the latest in a series of “green on blue” attacks by Afghan personnel on NATO troops in the country.
So far this year, 47 foreign troops have been killed by men wearing Afghan police uniforms or army closes, according to reports.
“It is with deep sadness that I must report the death of two soldiers from 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment who were shot and killed by a man wearing the uniform of the Afghan Local Police at a checkpoint in the south of Nahr-e Saraj”, said Major Laurence Roche, spokesman for Task Force Helmand.
“The Yorkshire Regiment has suffered a deep loss today and everyone serving within Task Force Helmand will want to send our condolences to the soldiers’ families and loved ones at this time”, he added.
The deaths also follow an attack on Camp Bastion, the UK’s headquarters in Afghanistan by the Taliban insurgents, who sought to kill Prince Harry, the third in line to the British throne, who is stationed there as an Apache helicopter pilot.
