UK customers overcharged due to errors

More than a quarter of customers in Britain are being overcharged through errors on their energy bills, a new survey shows.

According to the poll, undertaken by the consultancy firm Consumer Intelligence, some 28 percent of customers in Britain were overcharged an average of £121 a year by energy firms due to billing mistakes, the British daily Guardian reported on Thursday.

The survey also found that energy companies in the UK are making at least £650 million annually from their billing errors.

Moreover, it was revealed that online billing was making matters worse.

Some 40 percent of those receiving paper bills said they noticed an error in their statements, compared to 29 percent who received their bills online.

The Fuel Poverty Action campaign group described the findings as “daylight robbery”, saying the statistics were “another blow to the idea that the Big Six, or any bodies that put profit before people’s needs, are in any way suitable to be running our energy system.”

Recently, five of the UK’s Big Six energy companies announced hikes in customer bills for the winter.

According to a report by the National Audit Office (NAO), consumers across the UK are expected to face price hikes for gas, electricity and water until 2030, with the average energy bill due to rise by more than £700.
