UK calls gov’t meeting over Syria

This comes as Deputy PM Nick Clegg has also cancelled a planned trip to Afghanistan while the parliament is also deemed to be recalled by the end of the week for the meeting.

The British government announced on Monday that the planned meeting will focus on the situation in Syria and a possible military intervention by Britain and its western allies.

Cameron’s office said top on the agenda of the meeting will be an expected report by a United Nations chemical weapons inspector team that is in the Syrian capital’s suburb of Mouadamiya, claimed to have been targeted by a chemical attack last Wednesday.

The recalling of the parliament is reportedly aimed at ensuring that the MPs are informed about the developments in Syria while they should be consulted before a possible decision by the Conservative-led government to go for a military option on Syria.

Meanwhile, attorney general Dominic Grieve will be asked during the Wednesday NSC meeting whether going to war in Syria would be legal without the UN Security Council approval.

Britain, US and France, which have used the chemical attack claim to push for an attack on Syria, face a hard time if they want to give a legal cover to their aggression against Syria as a Security Council vote will almost surely fail because of Russian opposition to a military strike.
