UK Business Sec. foresees coalition end

“Everybody involved knows that before the next general election – the two parties will have to establish their own separate platforms and identity,” Cable told Britain’s Radio Five Live.

“But how that disengagement takes place, over what time period is very much an issue for the future, certainly not something we’re talking about at the moment,” he added.

Cable further said that the Lib Dems will be “competing as a separate party with a separate manifesto” adding he is “sure” the Conservatives will also take the same course.

His remarks are the latest in a series of face-offs between the coalition partners, which includes the dispute over the Tory-led move to scrap the Human Rights Act and the Prime Minister’s support for gay marriage, to name but a few.

Cable’s comments come as Lib Dems are increasingly under pressure to leave the coalition with Tories at the first available opportunity as their popularity has been hit hard after entering the coalition.

In the local elections held earlier this month, Lib Dems suffered a death blow, gaining their worst result in two decades, sharing only 16 percent of the votes and losing 44 percent of the council seats they were defending.
