UK austerity plan targets police force

Thousands of British police officers across the UK face job cuts by the end of the decade as part of the government austerity plan, Labour Party alleges.

According to a Labour analysis of figures collected by the House of Commons library, the country’s law enforcement officers will face the prospect of losing their jobs if Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne’s plans to shrink the size of the state goes into effect, Guardian reported on Monday.

The analysis hints that the Met, UK’s largest police force, may have to slash between 1,300 and 5,200 officers, out of its total force of 31,000, if the full planned cuts are introduced.

The analysis came amid warnings about a potential return to the emergency-based policing that was in effect during the 1980s.

The assessment by the Commons library came after it was commissioned by Shadow London Minister Gareth Thomas to evaluate the impact of a Recent Warning by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe, stating that he has to slash his budget by £1.4 billion by the end of the decade.

According to the figures calculated by the library, the average cost of a police officer in London is £77,000, which is about 20 percent more than the average of £63,900 in England and Wales.

Moreover, the Labour Party analysis further states that if the Met has to cut its budget by £100 million in 2016-7, it would have to cut the number of officers by 1,298, providing it only relied on officer headcount reductions to achieve such saving.

Therefore, if the same level of saving is required for each of the next four years, it means that 5,194 positions may be at risk.
