UK accused of meddling in China affairs

China’s Vice Foreign Minister Song Tao summoned the British ambassador in Beijing on Tuesday to protest the UK premier’s meeting with the Dalai Lama, saying it hurts Chinese people’s feelings and complicates the issue of Tibet.

Urging Britain to take “practical actions to correct the error,” China’s Foreign Ministry said British leaders should consider the “serious consequences” of meeting the Tibetan leader.

David Cameron and his Deputy Nick Clegg met the Dalai Lama privately on Monday at St Paul’s Cathedral.

The meeting “seriously interfered with China’s internal affairs, undermined China’s core interests and hurt the feelings of the Chinese people”, added the China’s Foreign Ministry in a statement.

China has alleged that the Tibetan leader is a separatist that supports the use of violence to set up an independent state.

The Dalai Lama, however, denies the notion, claiming that he desires a peaceful transition to autonomy for the remote Himalayan region.

Furthermore, China charges that the Dalai Lama is fueling unrest in the Himalayan region, insisting that the unrest in Tibet is incited by the West, serving as part of an effort by China’s opponents to tarnish the image of the country.
