A teenage son of a U.S. Air Force colonel living in Britain died yesterday after apparently shooting himself in the head at his family home.

The 13-year-old, who has not been named, is believed to have been hit in the temple with a pellet from an air rifle used to hunt rabbits.

Police said the tragedy on Sunday morning was not being treated as suspicious and no one was sought in relation to the shooting.

The boy’s father is a lieutenant-colonel based at RAF Croughton, Northamptonshire.

He was assigned to an academic exchange programme at Oxford University, the U.S. Air Force said last night.

He moved to the £750,000 stone house
in the Oxfordshire village of Souldern with his wife and three children
shortly before Christmas.

The schoolboy was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where it is believed he never regained consciousness and died with his family at his bedside.

The shooting happened shortly after
10am on Sunday morning while the family were at home in the rented
mansion in the tiny village of Souldern, near Bicester, Oxfordshire.

Neighbours
said that they had been told the boy had been arguing with his father, a
colonel in the U.S. Air Force, based at the USAF air base in RAF
Croughton, Oxfordshire.

One, who asked not to be named, said: ‘I have heard that the gun, an air rifle used by the colonel to shoot rabbits, was fired by the boy himself.

‘Whether he did it deliberately in the heat of the moment or accidentally, I don’t know.

‘The village is a very tight-knit community and everyone is very shocked by what has happened.

‘The house, which the colonel and his family rent at a huge cost, belongs to Mrs Hilary Hegworth-Davis, who is also American and lives now in Florida.’

The matter has been passed to the Oxford coroner.

A police spokeswoman said: ‘Thames Valley Police is continuing in its inquiries to help the family establish what has happened.

‘It is believed there is no third-party involvement and so no one is being sought in relation to the incident.’

Another neighbour said: ‘I understand that he is shortly to leave the air force and is now on secondment to Oxford University where he is studying a three-year course to become a Professor in War Studies.

‘I have been told he wants to teach at the War College after he finishes his studies at the university.’

Neighbours said they are unaware whether the boy shot himself on purpose or not, but police have said they are not treating the incident as suspicious

Other shocked neighbours told how the young family had only moved into the grey stone mansion, which they started renting, just before Christmas.

‘They seemed very happy and smiley when I last saw them,’ said one woman, who asked not to be named.

‘When we saw all the police cars and ambulance racing down the lane we wondered what could have possibly happened.

‘They are all American and he is an Air Force colonel. He also has links to Oxford University where he has told people he is studying.

‘I have heard the incident involved the oldest boy. We don’t really know what has happened.’

Another added: ‘They are quite a young family and have not really got involved in village life. I have seen the kids driven off to schools.’

Yesterday evening a single police car was parked outside the address and officers prevented people from entering the driveway.

Earlier forensic scenes of crime officers had attended the scene and searched the house.
