Two British police officers have been injured in clashes between supporters of the far-right English Defence League (EDL) and counter-demonstrators in London.
The violence erupted as EDL supporters marched into a street in the center of Slough, Berkshire, where a counter anti-fascist demonstration was underway.
The EDL’s march, which was against plans for an all-girls Muslim school in the city and a Muslim community center in Langley, was met by the Slough Trades Union Council, the Anti-Fascist Network, and local residents who accuse the group of having fascist tendencies.
Demonstrators started hurling bottles and railings as the EDL supporters entered Slough’s High Street. According to reports, at least one smoke bomb was set off during the clashes on Saturday.
Thames Valley Police say officers in riot gear intervened in an effort to quell the violence, which resulted in four people being held on public order offences.
A police spokesperson said, “Two officers were injured during the demonstration, one sustained facial injuries and the other an injury to his leg.”
Authorities estimate that up to 600 people took part in the opposing demonstrations.
The EDL’s anti-Islam thuggery has heightened following the murder of British soldier Lee Rigby in Woolwich, southeastern London.
A wave of anti-Muslim hate crimes, including the torching of mosques and vandalizing Muslim graves, hit Britain after Rigby was killed in a knife attack back in May.
