Victim … travel agent Michelle Smith was stabbed on the Thai resort island of Phuket.

THAI authorities have reportedly charged two men accused of killing an Australian travel agent on the tourist resort island of Phuket.

Michelle Smith, 60, of Perth, was fatally stabbed on June 20 when two men on a motorbike tried to snatch her handbag.

The ABC reported yesterday that Surasak Suwannachote had confessed to the stabbing and Surin Tadthong had confessed to riding the motorbike during the crime.

Thai police found a purple Honda Dream 100cc motorbike they believe was used as the getaway vehicle at a shop where the suspected killer had worked.

The men were arrested late last month and have been charged with co-operating to kill a person for personal benefit, taking property with a weapon, causing death and injury, and carrying a weapon in a public place.

Mrs Smith was among a group of 10 travel agents returning to their hotel after an evening meal at the time of the attack and it is believed the men stole only $10.

They could face the death penalty but the suspects’ co-operation and admissions make a life sentence more likely if they are found guilty.

”We are aware of reports two people have been charged over the death of an Australian woman in Phuket,” the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said yesterday. ”The Australian embassy in Bangkok is liaising with authorities.”

Australians account for more than 50 per cent of visitors to Thailand’s resorts during the present low season.
