TWO Hong Kong men will remain in custody after being charged with importing 72 litres of methamphetamine hidden in bottles of hair products into Sydney.
Chun-Yu Kwan, 35, and Kai-Wing Kwok, 43, were arrested on Friday morning by Australian Federal Police (AFP) while allegedly receiving a consignment of hairdressing equipment imported from China last weekend.
The AFP allowed the drugs to be delivered under surveillance before making their arrests.
Police say the methamphetamine has a street value of up to $43 million.
“We have disrupted the activities of a drug syndicate and prevented methamphetamine arriving on Australian streets,” said Australian Federal Police (AFP) Sydney office manager Ray Johnson.
In the last financial year, police and customs seized a total of 4.8 tonnes of illicit drugs, with a street value of $1.6 billion, Mr Johnson said.
The NSW manager of Customs’ container examination facility, Paul Willard, warned Australian authorities were savvy to the various ways criminals tried to smuggle drugs.
“Criminals should be aware that we have the examination skills, supported by cutting-edge technology, to detect even the most sophisticated concealments,” he said in a statement.
The maximum penalty for offences such as these is life imprisonment and/or a $1.275 million fine.
Kwan and Kwok were charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of illicit drugs, and appeared at Central Local Court on Friday where they did not apply for bail.
It was formally refused and they will appear in court again on July 10.
The investigation is continuing and police have not ruled out further arrests.
