Two boys have died after a stormwater drain collapsed on them in north Queensland.
The boys, aged 12 and 14, died after being pulled from the soil that smothered them in Ayr, south of Townsville, about 7pm (AEST) on Monday night.
Paramedics performed CPR on the boys, who were pulled from the drain in a critical condition, the Department of Community Safety said.
It is believed the boys had been playing in the drain. Photos of the scene show a bicycle propped up against an embankment.
It is understood authorities were called when the boys failed to return home.
Investigations into the school holidays tragedy will continue on Tuesday.
