Two asylum-seeker boats intercepted

Nearly 130 suspected asylum-seekers are being transferred to Christmas Island after two boats were stopped in Australian waters late on Saturday afternoon.

The first boat, intercepted northeast of Christmas Island by ACV Triton, is believed to have been carrying 100 passengers and two crew.

The second vessel, carrying 24 passengers and three crew, was intercepted southwest of Ashmore Islands by Australian Customs Vessel Ashmore Guardian.

The 129-odd people will undergo security, identity and health checks at Christmas Island.

An immigration spokeswoman told AAP on Friday there were 1033 detainees on Christmas Island at present.

The department’s website says the “regular operational capacity” of the island’s five detention facilities is 950.

However, it can be expanded to just over 2000 if the “contingency capacity” is used, which can mean the use of tents.

A spokeswoman for Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare told AAP on Saturday there was still “plenty of space” at Christmas Island.

The boats arrived the same day Opposition Leader Tony Abbott unveiled coalition policy on asylum seekers.

Mr Abbott said under a coalition government there would be a “strong presumption that illegal boat people who have destroyed their documents not be given refugee status”.

Mr Abbott said he would also ensure that his immigration minister “exercise the right” to appeal against affirmative decisions.

He would also appoint an integrity commissioner to report to the minister every six months on what was happening to the processing success rates.

Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison said the latest boat arrivals showed the importance of tougher policy on refugee assessments.

“These latest illegal boats carrying 129 people mean that once again the government’s monthly budgeted arrivals of just 450 has been blown and we are not even 10 days into June,” Mr Morrison said in a statement.

The Opposition justice, customs and border protection spokesman, Michael Keenan, said 7000 people had already arrived “illegally” this financial year.

“At this rate, 2012 is shaping up to be a glorious year for the people smugglers, with record-breaking profits courtesy of Labor’s soft policies as an excuse to do nothing,” Mr Keenan said.
