The gunfight broke out after contingents of Yemeni army troops came under heavy fire from al-Qaeda militants in the coastal town of Shakra, situated over 400 kilometers (248 miles) south of Sana’a, on Saturday, a local security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Xinhua.
“A group of the al-Qaeda militants were engaged in a gunfight with army troops on the outskirts of Shakra town… Two terrorists were killed in the region,” the official said.
He added, “The army troops carried out the operations on prior intelligence information about the presence of terrorists in Shakra and other different mountainous areas in Abyan.”
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has taken advantage of the weakness of the Yemeni central government during about a year and eight months of anti-government demonstrations to expand their presence in the impoverished country.
Al-Qaeda loyalists have carried out a spate of deadly attacks against Yemeni security forces since Ali Abdullah Saleh’s successor, President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi, came to power in February 2012.
In May, the Yemeni military launched an all-out offensive and retook a string of towns in Abyan province, where al-Qaeda loyalists had established themselves.
