Minutes after Newsweek tweeted its upcoming “Muslim Rage” cover, the #MuslimRage Twitter hashtag was flooded with lighthearted jokes about Muslim life.
Newsweek’s story by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, entitled “Muslim Rage: How I Survived It, How We Can End It,” in part examines the passionate and occasionally violent protests over a controversial anti-Islam YouTube video that have been spreading throughout Muslim communities. Many of the #MuslimRage tweets were subversive in nature, responding to what many consider to be an overly sensationalist cover story.
As #MuslimRage quickly became popular enough to trend on Twitter, users also began jokes on the related hashtag #MuslinRage.
