Judge Joe Brown, of the popular TV show by that name, is jailed for contempt of court.

Popular TV Court Judge Joe Brown recently spent five days in a Memphis, Tennessee jail on a contempt of court charge. The former Shelby County (TN) Criminal Court Judge had a hit TV show on CBS—Judge Joe Brown— from 1998 to 2013.

Judge Brown’s court troubles began in March, 2014, when he appeared in Juvenile Court to represent someone pro bono in a child support case. When the court staff had no record of the case, Judge Brown asked for the case to be dismissed. Juvenile Court Magistrate Harold Horne denied Judge Brown’s request. Reportedly, Judge Brown became verbally abusive and did not heed Magistrate Horne’s warning to calm down.  Judge Brown was initially given 24 hours in jail for contempt of court. However, Judge Brown continued to yell as he was being removed from the courtroom, saying, “This is a circus, sir. That’s three days. You can do all you want! Four days. You don’t have the jurisdiction. Five days.” Consequently, Judge Brown was cited for contempt of court five times and sentenced to five days in the Shelby County  jail.

Jailed, but  released later that day on his own recognizance, Judge Brown unsuccessfully appealed his case, and on Aug. 14, 2015, the Tennessee Supreme Court refused to allow Judge Brown to appeal a Court of Appeals decision that had upheld the jail sentence. The 68-year old Judge Brown turned himself in and served the sentence.

In a statement, Judge Brown said, “I will not apologize for vigorously defending my client and demanding that the court follow the law. What I saw was a miscarriage of justice and I did what needed to be done. I will serve the time and I will continue to stand up and speak out for justice as I have done throughout my 40-year legal career.”

Many are wondering if this is a publicity ploy. Judge Brown is currently running for Shelby County District Attorney. His own attorney was present with him at the March 2014 Juvenile Court incident.
