Turkmen president reelected in vote

Almost all votes are counted and “Berdymukhamedov won a landslide victory in a presidential election with 97.14 percent,” the commission said in a statement on Monday.

The election was held on Sunday with the participation of Berdymukhamedov and seven other candidates.

“This is a great number and we are happy for this. Everyone has supported our open election,” said Orazmurat Niyazliev, the head of the central election commission.

In 2007, Berdymukhamedov, 54, also won almost 90 percent of the votes in the presidential election.

Berdymukhamedov came to power after the death of Saparmurat Niyazov in 2006.

In 1992, Niyazov, being the only candidate, was elected as the country’s first president. Later in 1999, the parliament declared him president for life.
