Turkish premier to visit Iran in March

Erdogan will visit Iran at the end of this month after attending a two-day nuclear security summit in South Korea on March 26-27.

The summit will focus in large part on nuclear safety and security in the aftermath of Japan’s 2011 nuclear disaster.

On March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake and tsunami hit Japan’s northeastern coast, setting off a nuclear disaster by knocking out power to the cooling systems of reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, and causing radiation leaks.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan said on Monday that North Korea’s nuclear standoff and Iran’s nuclear energy issue are not slated for formal discussion, however, leaders attending the summit will likely address those issues informally.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program, using this pretext to impose sanctions against Iran and threaten the country with military attack.

Iran has refuted the allegations, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has the right to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
