Turkish police clash with Kurds

Police on Sunday used water cannon and tear gas to stop the New Year festivities.

Turkish authorities oppose a demand by the Kurds to hold New Year celebrations.

Turkish state media said police arrested several people in Diyarbakir.

Police in Istanbul prevented the Kurdish people from holding a ceremony. A group of Kurds stoned the Istanbul police, according to state media.

Ethnic Kurds in Turkey make up 20 percent of the population of about 70 million.
