Turkish police attack Syrian refugees

Around 500 Syrian refugees staying at a camp near the Oncupinar border gate staged a protest for not receiving enough drinking water, Sabah daily reported on Tuesday.

The group hurled stones at the police and set garbage containers on fire while officers fired tear gas to disperse protesters.

Syria has been the scene of deadly unrest since early last year.

Opposition groups blame Damascus for the deadly violence but the government says foreign-backed armed gangs are behind the bloody unrest.

Thousands of Syrians living in villages near the border have crossed into Turkey to seek shelter following the launch of an operation by Syrian security forces in border cities and villages to hunt down armed gangs.

The refugees have been camping in Turkish provinces such as Hatay, Gaziantep, Urfa and Kilis near the Syrian border.
