Turkish MP denounces Gitmo operation

Head of the Turkish Parliament’s Human Rights Inquiry Commission Ayhan Sefer Ustun says the detention center is a clear violation of human rights by the US.

During an interview with a Press TV correspondent, Ustun questioned the legitimacy of a detention center established “outside the US borders,” in which its officials “don’t recognize any law and say we have the authority to do so.”

“After the 9/11 attacks, unfortunately some officials in the US have left democracy, human rights, and freedom aside and have only focused on security,” Ustun said.

The Member of Parliament further criticized the US by adding that security alone is not enough for people.

The US is accused of using torture techniques, including simulated drowning, known as water-boarding, on alleged terrorist suspects, many of whom have been held without charges for ten years.

The Guantanamo detention facility was initially established at a US naval base in Cuba after the US invasion of Afghanistan in January 11, 2002, under former US President George W. Bush.
