FNA- Turkish Army Chief of Staff General Hulusi Akar is due to visit Iran next week at the head of a high-ranking military delegation.
“Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri had a very good visit to Turkey (in August) and invited General Akar to Iran,” Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ebrahim Rahimpour said on Wednesday.
Noting that Iran and Turkey had somehow different positions on Syria and Iraq in the past, he said after the Astana peace talks on Syria and cooperation among Iran, Russia and Turkey in this regard, differences are decreasing and “this makes Akar’s visit to Iran more important”.
Rahimpour also underlined that Akar’s visit will take place under such conditions that the Iraqi Kurdistan region has held an independence referendum, and expressed the hope that the Kurds would take no more action in line with secession from Iraq.
General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri paid a three-day trip to Turkey in August.
During the visit, the Iranian officials discussed the most important regional developments, fighting against terrorism and border cooperation with their Turkish counterparts.
The chiefs of staff of the Iranian and Turkish armed forces also agreed to strengthen bilateral and regional security cooperation.
General Baqeri also met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to discuss regional developments and bilateral ties.
Before meeting Erdogan, General Baqeri had met Turkish Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli.
