Turkey has released former army chief Ilker Basbug from prison after a local court overturned his conviction for plotting a coup.
Basbug, who was sentenced to life in prison last year, walked free from the high-security Silivri Prison near the city of Istanbul on Friday.
“We were put behind bars by those who act on revenge and hatred,” Basbug said.
“Prison means pain, agony and suffering,” he said. “But I do not harbor any revenge or hatred because love conquers hatred.”
Basbug was handed a life sentence in August 2013 along with hundreds of other military officers for their alleged role in the so-called Ergenekon conspiracy to topple the government.
The development has increased uncertainty over the fate of court cases trying coup plots against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The release comes a day after Turkey’s Constitutional Court ruled that Basbug’s legal rights had been violated in the course of proceedings.
The 71-year-old general, who is under an overseas travel ban, has pledged to continue his fight for justice.
“My release is just the beginning,” he said.
“I firmly believe that all of my comrades will be released soon. If that does not happen, there is no point in my being released.”
