Turkey supports diplomacy on Iran

“The problem over Iran’s nuclear [energy] program has to be resolved through diplomacy,” Ali Babacan said during the Aspen Bosporus Dialogue Conference in Istanbul on Friday.

He went on to say that Iran’s nuclear energy program is an important item on the agenda “not only for the region but also the whole world.”

“Any method other than diplomacy would have grave consequences for the region and even for the world,” the official added.

Babacan stated that diplomatic channels must be exploited as far as they can go because other approaches will benefit none of the involved parties.

“We think that non-diplomatic methods will have negative results for the region and the world and diplomacy should continue. We wish our Iranian neighbors to be transparent regarding their nuclear program and cooperate better with international organizations,” he added.

Emphasizing on the necessity of negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 – the US, the UK, France, China, Russia and Germany – the Turkish deputy premier advised the world powers to “really focus on a diplomatic settlement and sincerely work to that end.”

The US and Israel have been escalating their war rhetoric against Iran over the past few months, claiming that Tehran seeks to produce nuclear weapons.

On March 2, US President Barack Obama threatened Iran with a military strike over the country’s nuclear energy program.

In an interview with Atlantic magazine, Obama said the US is “not taking any option off the table” in order to stop Iran’s nuclear energy program.

“It includes a military component. And I think people understand that,” he added three days before a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington.

On February 27, Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin warned Israel that should it attack Iran “the consequences will be truly catastrophic, their real scope impossible to imagine.”

Iran has denied Western allegations about its nuclear energy program and has promised a crushing response to any military strike against the country. Tehran has also warned that any such measure could result in a war that would spread beyond the Middle East.
