Turkey sued over hike in energy prices

Uzeyir Tunc, the general secretary of the party, filed the lawsuit in the Council of State, which is the highest administrative court in Turkey.

Official figures released on April 1 revealed that the price of natural gas has increased by around 18 percent and the electricity price showed an 8 percent increase.

Tunc also called on the Turkish government to present transparent details to the nation and to explain why it has decided to reduce Iranian oil imports.

“The US Ambassador had warned why don’t you comply with the sanctions and just a day after Turkey decided to reduce its oil imports from Iran by 20 percent and at the same day we faced these price hikes,” he said.

Turkey’s Energy Minister Taner Yildiz told reporters in Ankara on March 30 that Ankara has plans to purchase one million tons of crude oil from Libya through the Turkish Petroleum Refineries Corporation (Tupras) to make up for Iranian oil shortfall, the Associated Press reported.

“We believe that our decision is right for the normalization of Libya and to increase the trade volume bilaterally,” he added.

The development comes one day after US Ambassador to Turkey Francis Riccardione, was quoted by daily Haberturk as saying that the Obama administration expects Turkey to reduce its imports of Iranian oil.

Turkey’s main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party, has reportedly said it plans to stage a protest to voice opposition to the recent price hikes.
