nsnbc : The Turkey-backed Tahrir al-Sham attacked positions held by the Syrian – Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) on Monday. Attacks were repelled. In related news, the former Euphrates Shield constituent Liwa al-Shimal joined the Syrian Democratic Forces.
Units of the Turkey-backed Tahrir al.Sham attacked YPG positions Monday night in Cindires, 15 kilometers southwest of Afrin city center. The gangs reportedly targeted Barin and Baz hills. The YPG reported that the attackers were repelled and that an – unspecified – number of attackers were killed. The YPG didn’t report on own casualties. Local sources also reported Turkish artillery fire in Sera and Sheraqa towns in coordination with the gang’s attack.
In the meantime, the Turkish army reportedly fired four mortars to Basufane, a village near Serawe town. The mortars hit some houses and caused damage. No casualties were reported. Bellune village in rural Sera was reportedly also targeted by Turkish army with mortars. 11 mortars hit the village causing damage to houses.
In related news, Liwa Al Shimal, fighters from Deir Ez Zor, joined the ranks of the U.S.-backed, Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) after leaving the Turkish supported Euphrates Shield alliance. Liwa Al Shimal immediately deployed to Raqqa to fight against ISIS gangs there.
The groups commander Mihemed Al Musa said Liwa al-Shimal joined the SDF to participate in the fight against ISIS in Raqqa. Al Musa said Turkey promised them to support the fight to retake Deir Ez-Zor but didn’t keep its promises.
Al Musa added that Liwa al-Shimal wants everybody to know that the group has left the Turkey-led Euphrates Shield alliance and joined the U.S.-backed, predominantly Syrian – Kurdish SDF. The group is now taking an active part in operations against ISIS in Raqqa.
