Tunisians protest against terrorism

Tunisians have taken to the streets across the country to protest against terrorism, denouncing the escalation of violence in the North African country, Press TV reports.

Tunisians staged nationwide marches on Friday expressing opposition to any form of terrorism, condemning the rise of violence in the country.

Many believe the recent violence is a result of foreign support to the armed groups that threaten Tunisia’s stability. Experts argue that Takfiri groups control some mosques and preach hate speech to fuel conflicts in the Arab world.

The protests come after Takfiri militants killed four police officers on May 28 in an attack on the residence of the country’s Interior Minister Lotfi Ben Jeddou in the west-central region of Kasserine. The so-called Islamic State of Tunisia has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The deadly assault on the interior minister’s house was the latest in a series of attacks on security forces in Kasserine.

Tunisia’s armed forces have been staging operations in the Chaambi Mountains in the western region close to the border with Algeria where militants have taken refuge. Since late 2012, Tunisian troops have been battling dozens of militants hiding out in the mountainous region.

Tunisian authorities are also concerned about the crisis in neighboring Libya. Officials say terror cells are trained in Libya to conduct operations in Tunisia.

More than 40 soldiers and policemen have died in Tunisia over the past two years, mostly in attacks by terrorist groups.
