Tunisia’s legislative and presidential elections will take place in October and November, the Independent High Electoral Commission (ISIE) announced.
Tunisian parties have resolved a longstanding dispute and agreed to hold the legislative elections before the presidential election.
The head of ISIE Shafiq Sersar yesterday presented to the President of the Constituent Assembly Mustapha Ben Jafar the commission’s proposal to hold the legislative and presidential elections later this year.
The commission proposed to hold the legislative elections on October 26 and to hold the presidential elections in two sessions, the first on November 23 and the second on December 28.
The announcement means eligible voters, those over 18 years old, are able to enrol. The commission announced earlier that it will start registering voters on June 23. Registration can take place on the phone and some 2,500 call handlers have been employed to man the phones.
The commission announced yesterday that it will publish the final list of those accepted to join the elections subsidiary bodies on its website.
Sersar said that he respects any court decision challenging any member, after objections were presented against some members accusing them of being bias.
