Truss appeals to LNP to work against Labor federally

Nationals leader Warren Truss has told a triumphant LNP party conference that Queensland was fed up with Labor’s mismanagement and that now it was time to spread the sentiment nationally.

Mr Truss closed the three-day LNP state conference in Brisbane on Sunday, assuring delegates the federal coalition was ‘‘strong’’ like the LNP.

‘‘We are united, we’re positive, we’re energised and we’re determined,’’ he said.

He said it was obvious Labor was on the nose but urged all members not to take this dissatisfaction for granted.

‘‘Queenslanders have enjoyed their day of judgment – the day they were able to say ‘enough is enough’ of Labor’s mismanagement,’’ Mr Truss said.

‘‘We now need to spread that message across the nation.’’

In step with LNP president Bruce McIver, Mr Truss made little mention of Prime Minister Julia Gillard and concentrated his attack on the ALP itself.

Mr McIver on Saturday urged the party to move away from their attacks on Ms Gillard and focus ‘‘on attacking the toxic Labor brand’’.

‘‘The brand is the problem … and it offers us the ability to link each and every future leader of the Labor party with that toxic Labor brand,’’ Mr McIver told the conference.

Mr Truss said in his closing speech: ‘‘This is not so much about Gillard, or Bligh, or a handful of personalities, this is about Labor.

‘‘These are not just unusual people who have blotted the perfect record book.

‘‘The reality is Labor has always been a disastrous government.’’

Hundreds of delegates erupted into laughter and applause when Mr Truss added: ‘‘They can’t stop the boats unless of course they are carrying live cattle.’’

He ended with an appeal for all members to be active ahead of the federal election.
