Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan has taken to Twitter to share his message about the strength of the Australian economy, creating a new hashtag to share economic facts.
Mr Swan said he welcomed robust debate on the economy and Australia’s overall economic prospects, and on particular policies such as the federal government’s carbon pricing scheme and the national broadband network.
“But the debate needs to proceed from a firm foundation of facts,” Mr Swan said in his regular weekly economic note on Sunday.
The treasurer started issuing his economic note three years ago to communicate better but went a step further on Sunday in his bid to connect with Australians.
“From today, I also plan to start sharing interesting economic facts using the #EcoFact hashtag on Twitter to further kick along the debate,” Mr Swan said.
“A vigorous contest of ideas remains the best way to ensure we keep getting the big policy calls and economic settings right for the benefit of all Australians.”
But his choice of hashtag wasn’t a hit with everyone, with one Twitter user tweeting “Today @SwannyDPM is kicking off #EcoFact for updates of facts on Australia’s economy (because clearly he knows nothing about #ecology)”.
Other green Twitter users took up the hashtag with different sorts of ecological facts, including how many plastic bags were thrown into the ocean killing sea creatures each year and the level of municipal waste.
