Zimmerman has been in hiding, possibly out of the state, since his release on
bail last month and been subjected to numerous death threats. He was not
present in the court for the hearing.
Martin’s death sparked national outrage and Zimmerman is likely to be held in
isolation in prison to protect him from other inmates.
Benjamin Crump, a lawyer for the Martin’s parents, praised the judge’s
decision and said his clients had always believed Zimmerman should be
remanded in custody until his trial on one count of second degree murder.
Zimmerman pleaded not guilty to the murder charge, claiming that he opened
fire in self-defence after the 17-year-old attacked him on the upmarket
housing estate where Martin’s father lives.
Mr Crump said the judge’s ruling was further evidence that Zimmerman had a
capacity for dishonesty. “We fully expect that the special prosecutor will
make George Zimmerman’s credibility be front and center in this entire
case,” he said.
The trial is unlikely to take place before next year.
